How does Shanahan win the toss in OT and take the ball (with the new rules)?
KC had to go for it in ot on 4th down 3.
SF wouldn’t have kicked fg in OT if they were down 7.
It worked out great for me, but how does this happen at this level in this Super Bowl?

He is just not a good coach with a lead in big games. I really don't know what the explanation is, if he goes into panic mode, or what. But it is uncanny.

my clock is stuck on 420 time to hit this bong

I think he might have taken ball thinking Kc defense was gassed but obviously didn’t work out. Not Turning interception into points and abandoning running game at times early third could have been the difference . Turnovers came from both teams but Kc made the most of it.

Because he took the opportunity to score first (hopefully a TD) and trust his defense, which up to that point had largely kept KC out of the end zone.

Imagine if Shanahan deferred, and KC proceeded to score a TD on its opening possession, putting the pressure on game-manager Purdy to respond with nothing less than 7. Purdy proceeds to throw a bad interception trying to push the ball down the field. Do you think the SF fanbase would be saying that Shanahan made the right call? Of course not - they'd be shrieking that he should have taken the ball first!

The armchair-quarterbacking about this decision is nothing short of silly.

Incorrect. You always defer! That way if the team scores your playbook AUTOMATICALLY goes to 4 downs, making playing much more easier knowing you have 4 downs each and every time to get a first down! And Purdy is not a game-manger had the second or third highest yards per attempt in modern history! Comebacks in both playoff wins, but when media says something most the repeat it verbatim.

I've always said the guy is a moron! Gave away two prior Super Bowls! Yesterday was doing a great job until that idiotic decision!!! Plus a lot of running not on Silverbacks side! Should have ran the ball when in field goal range at SB side and kill more of the clock!

Today, the SF players are saying they didn't know the OT rules. They weren't alone as at least two media members...one on the NFL channel the constant idiot Dan Olosky on ESPN thought the time was going to run out on the Chiefs at the end of OT when that is just like the first quarter. Coaching matters.

Further proof that guy is a moron! Is it not the coaches responsibility to ensure the players know the rules?

Think this was first time rule came into play.I did not know it, but its a pretty big rule for all the coaches and players not to know it. I do think overall unless wind is a big factor that the best decision is to defer and then you know what you need and can be in 4 down sets if down 7. Could make case though that you do not want to give ball to great QB first, as if he gets 7, it puts a lot pressure on a fairly inexperienced QB late in game. It was a great game. Mahomes is the Best to play the QB position.Doesn t have 7 Rings yet and may not get 7, but he could go to any NFL team and make them SB contender.Mahomes on 9ers, I think they win by 14 to 20 points last night.

Good guess on Shanahan taking the ball first was due to a possible tired KC Def, but he said he discussed with his staff in advance of the game and that's what they came up with. If I was on his staff, I would tell him if we defer, one of three things will happen, opponent will:
not score
fg
td
Which of these occurrences would make you regret deferring?
If the other team scores a TD, it would be a good debate if you go for two if you score; otherwise, the opponent has the opportunity to win with a fg.

Hardman did not realize the Chiefs won when he caught the TD.

As I said a couple of weeks ago. This idiot always finds a way to lose.
He cost me over 6K when he over coached and let his ego get in the way
and lost the SB with Atl and a 28-3 lead.
He lost again at SF blowing a 20-10 lead to his play calling in the SB
and lazy, over confident secondary.
He allowed his team to celebrate and mug it up for the cameras
in the 3rd Q. Late in the 4th Q KC scored 3 TD's in 6 min.

I knew I would have a chance to get most of my money back with the Chiefs.
It was a sweet victory in our house last night.
How in the fuck do you not know the OT rules in the NFL ?
Thanks to Reid and his coaching and Mahomes did it again.

Payback feels so fucking good against that fkn moron..

And a poster once called me an idiot for calling Shanahan an idiot! It never ends with him. How he's still coaching I just don't get it! Even in the 4th quarter, when driving late for the go ahead field, run the ball at Williams side! CMC average more yards behind Williams. At the very least leave less time and fewer timeouts for KC to come back and tie the game. I had KC too so it's not hate or sour grapes!

both offenses should have scored more points; it’s really interesting re-watching the game (far under an hour). You realize how close the game was and how many plays could’ve sent the game in another direction;
I rewatch Falcons/Pats SB at least once a year. Maybe it takes an hour even with rewatching key plays in slow motion.

Criticism could be made against each coach. Terrible clock management by Reid on last regulation drive; wasted time which forced tying fg on 2nd down with ball inside 10 yard line.
